Back at the office…closing up shop on a Friday night.

Out in Elmhurst, Queens at a large Asian grocery store where I’m looking for some Szechuan chili bean paste. I wish I could shop here every week.

imageHmmm, now where did they put it…found it! Plus a jar of Dan Dan Noodle sauce!

Next door is Taste Good Restaurant (no kidding), a Malaysian restaurant that serves KILLER curry laksa (a coconut milk based seafood and noodle soup that has a curry-like flavor — it’s way better than it sounds) loaded with great bits: big peeled shrimp, fried tofu puff (cut in half so the bubbly interior gets soaked in the spicy coconut milk), fishcake slices, a halved boiled egg, and beansprouts. It’s a bargain at $6! (Total cost of lunch and dinner in NYC: $11.50 plus tips…what an affordable city. The laksa did ‘cost’ a trip out to Queens, but it’s practically bang on the E train, which also runs right by the office and Eric’s apartment in the West Village. So it’s no hassle at all, and certainly not a crowded trip.

Back out into the night. To my left are kids are banging bumping shouting in two pickup bball games in the dim light of a small park. To the right is the Asian grocery store pictured above, just closing up at 9pm. Occasionally the ball crashes against the chain link like a cymbal shot. The Elmhurst train station is under foot where I will catch the R train back into Manhattan, to Union Square so I can browse the Strand Bookstore for some cheap used books (found five for $30) and then walk west on 12th St. to 7th Ave. where I will pick up Bank Street and then be back at the apt. Unfortunately my Droid battery died after this pic, so you’ll have to imagine the rest of the night.
