Ribs King Clean Plate Club

On the way home from Norris Lake in Tennessee after a week of sun and fun on the water with friends Brady & Holly, we stopped for dinner at the original Montgomery Inn in the Cincinnati suburb of Montgomery. I’ve heard about this place for years – since 1951 home of reputed great ribs with famous “Ribs King” sauce – but as far as I remember I’d never visited (unless I was there as a kid while Liz and Bus took me everywhere!) Well, I’ve decided it will likely be re-visited! The first photo shows us bibbed-up and ready to eat.

The Great Scape

When you grow garlic, you can harvest more than bulbs and cloves. In late June the garlic plants begin to flower, sending up delicate curly ‘scapes’ that will eventually burst into a frilly white flower ball. Most gardeners clip these scapes when they first appear to avoid having the plant divert energy away from the bulb building, resulting in bigger bulbs at harvest (in late July). When clipped early these flower stems are tender and can be put into almost any dish to add a delicate garlic note with the texture of a green bean. They are also delicious on their own, braised in a little wine or stock, or stir fried.

After a Long Day


We had a late dinner at the only restaurant left open in Colfax, CA (a pretty little mountain town well past Sacramento into the Sierras): Main Street Pizza. It was REALLY good — thin crisp crust, tasty sauce, and lots of cheese. It almost made me want to register on Yelp to get them out of three-and-a-half-star-hell. Maybe it actually will push me over the edge.

Big Bend Picnic

Beside the Rio Grande on March 19th, we picnicked on canned fish, tortillas, dried fruit, and cabbage salad with raisins.

Later we soaked in a natural hot spring next to the river, which was only about 15 feet wide at that point, and only knee deep.

Seventh Heaven

I’m in NYC for work and just took the 7 express train out to Flushing, New York’s vibrant new “Chinatown” where many of the newest immigrants have settled. It’s bright, loud, crowded, and has some of the best Chinese food in the City. I thought y’all might like to see what I got. Everything was fantastically good, and “buns” are actually Xiao Long Bao, or Shanghai style soup dumplings, and they were as good as I remember them from our visit to China. High praise.
