SFiFF v: The Wayward Cloud

Perpetual_Motion.jpgTHE WAYWARD CLOUD (2005)
Taiwan/France 112 minutes
Directed by Tsai Ming-Liang

“The most audacious film to date from the visionary director Tsai Ming-Liang.” [SFiFF Program Guide]

I won”t say that there was a story to The Wayward Cloud; there were scenes. Often the scenes were shot with a fixed camera, people moving within the frame—or moving in and out of the frame—and sometimes no people at all for minutes at a time, causing a palpable anticipation. We”re usually in a tall apartment building in Taipei, Taiwan, in an apartment, in the hallways, in the elevator, in the stairwell. A few scenes are outside the building; and the musical scenes are in fantasyland.

“Stuff” Happens

Get It Done
Last summer my friend Michael leveled with us: “You GOTTA get a better toilet…” He would know, because he builds houses for a living. We knew that our main toilet sometimes had trouble “processing batches,” but I thought that might have more to do with the drain pipe plumbing not providing the appropriate amount of action to pull things through. “No,” Michael assured us. “Your toilet sucks. Any modern low-flow model would beat the shit out of yours.” Literally, I suppose.

Da Masters 2006

A few weeks ago, Brad (Kelly’s brother, the restaurateur) emailed me and suggested we go over to Augusta for one or two practice rounds.   I had always been under the impression that even practice tickets were allocated, that’s turns out to be true, but despite the lottery distribution, there are plenty being sold on the streets into the course.   Who knew?   Brad did, and he convinced me that it was a given that we would have no problem buying them (shades of my boast for the 1986 Super Bowl in Pasadena, Marcus?).   He said they”d go for $100 each, but if I was OK with that, we”d plan to go.   We cleared our respective calendars for the target days.

This past Monday afternoon, Kelly forwarded me an email from her boss asking “Does anybody want my Masters practice tickets for this year?   I can”t go,”.   How fast did I call him?   Right.   Got them.   SWEET!

I Love Paris In The Springtime

Below are a group of photos forwarded to me by our friend Kareem who sometimes works in Paris (he composes and arranges film scores –among other music projects — check out his latest effort for a film called “Encounter Point” that was recently shown at the Tribeca film fest, and will be shown at the SF Intl Film Fest May 1 and 3):

April In Paris…

…well… at least the hotel rates will be cheap.

These are some photos from my friend Bruce who lives
there.

Sorry if I sent these already. Just thought you might be interested. These
pictures were taken by a friend (of a friend) of mine who is a photographer
for the Associated Press in Paris.

All of these photos (layed out in no particular order that I can tell) were labeled “Boulevard Saint Michel” and a few were also labeled “Saturday” which I assume indicates the location and date of the images.

Can you fill us in, Bro?
